I’d just like to picture a Mr Bean type farce with him running up a big hill to get cell service, unlocking the car, then running back to hear it click locked again just as he got close.
rinse, repeat. hilarity and insanity increasing with each run.

Except for the fact that the car didn’t have service either...
I can’t believe SHE walked the two miles to call for help. I would have made his ass do that walk of shame.

Do these things really work over cellular instead of Bluetooth? That seems like a mistake...

Maybe he can’t run? I’m faster and have better endurance than my fiancée but a current knee issue keeps me from running more than a mile before my knee feels like it’s going to tear itself apart.

I’m guessing it’s a security thing. Phone sends request to tesla servers and then to car once verified. If Bluetooth only, someone could just make some sort of brute force device until the right security code is found. I’m no tech guy so I’m mostly just guessing

Properly done, brute forcing should take years, so I’d hope that’s not a concern.

#1 hobby of tesla owners: talking about how wonderful their tesla is.
#2 hobby of tesla owners: documenting every minute flaw or potential opportunity for improvement with excruciating detail on any blog/social media outlet/ news media that will listen.

Depends on how strong the password is. Tesla being more tech than car company probably realizes this but who knows.

I’m sure there are several reasons she made the run.
I made that comment assuming they were both equally capable of walking two miles. I just imagined the look on Mrs McMike’s face when it was suggested that anyone else other than
me
made that walk.

Should be entirely possible to do it so that password strength is largely irrelevant (or without a password). Basically you’d want the device to supply the entropy for the key rather than (or in addition to) the user.

details, details....
but there still are roads there, cause it’s not no one lives there, it’s really, few live there. just not enough population for cell phone coverage to be feasible.

I mean, even the buy-here-pay-here ignition interlocks have an emergency code so you can start the car 3-4 times when you’re out of signal range if it thinks you haven’t paid your bill.

We pass a cell tower every hundred yards for a thousand miles, but when you really need one, you end up walking your ass off. This is no way to run a desert!

Dumbass.
And another reason I still prefer a legit key to turn instead of a button to press.

it doesn’t do the real job of a key, that’s what’s wrong. Sure it operated as designed, but all of this stupidity wouldn’t matter if he stuck a key into the car and turned it.
NOW GET OFF MY DAMN LAWN

I was defending the metal key, saying it wasn’t a problem that needed a solution. I’ve got your back.

Ahhh, gotcha. Thought you were saying there was nothing wrong with the dude’s key fob. Which. I suppose their wasn’t...except fot the fact that it wasn’t with him.
You sir, are welcome on my lawn.

Fact: No one has ever driven away, leaving a metal key at home
No one has ever walked away from a running car with a metal key in their pocket.
Metal keys don’t take batteries.
Metal keys are awesome.

I once saw a Ford dealer set up a display at my old ad agency with 5 new cars hoping we’d buy what we were selling.
He set the keyfob in the Fiesta’s cup holder (one of the first keyfobbed/push button start Fiesta’s mind you and I’m sure this has been handled by now) and then the door somehow got locked.
The keyfob was at JUST THE RIGHT angle that he couldn’t get it to unlock. they were even shaking the car to get it closer to a door to try and unlock by proximity.
Ended up having to call for “Ford Roadside Assistance”.
I almost fell over laughing when a Dodge Dakota pulled up, at that point it was too much.
